Personal Bio:

Mary Barry is an experienced practitioner having over 25 years working with children and families. Her career includes working in Montessori education at preschool and elementary level with children from aged 2 to 12 years.  Mary has worked in the field of special education with children of moderate learning disabilities.

Mary worked as Childcare Manager in a community-based Family Centre.  The Family Centre aims to optimise development in young children by offering support to families and delivering positive childhood programmes to a community challenged with social and economic difficulties.

Mary currently manages a community focused Play Therapy Service in the Northside of Cork City. The goal of this work is to enhance the mental health and emotional well being of children aged 3 -12 years.  In this role Mary works with both private clients and referrals from public agencies and local schools.

Mary also offers supervision to qualified play therapy practitioners and students on the CIT Masters in Play Therapy Course.

Area of Interest:

Mary’s play therapy experience has encompassed working on attachment issues, bereavement, post traumatic stress issues, and emotional stress and trauma arising from child protection issues. Her work also aims to support the emotional challenges encountered by children with anxiety, low self-belief, and others with challenges of ASD, Dyslexia, and Sensory Processing issues.  A body of her work has been with children in care but she also offers play therapy to a small number of private clients and has worked with children with experiences of parental conflict and separation/divorce.

Fundamentally Mary’s focus is on a child-centred and holistic approach to working with children and believes that the practise of non-directive play therapy promotes the welfare and healing potential within each child.
