My name is Nicola Patterson and I run a Therapy Centre in Glanmire, specialising in Non Directive Play Therapy. I graduated in 1996 with a Degree in Social care and have since continued my professional development with a Postgraduate Diploma in Forensic Psychology, A MA in Womens Studies and most recently was awarded My Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy.
I have spent the last 20 years working both in Ireland and the UK in a variety of settings including, Community drug treatment centres, Residential centres, lecturing in third level colleges and have spent the last 15 years working in a specialist education centre for children with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties in Cork City. As a result, I have come to realise that the original ‘talk therapy’ method is often not an appropriate intervention for children in distress.
I have found, through my work in private practice, that children and young people respond much more, in a real and willing way, within the play room environment. I work with young people between the ages of 3 and 15 years and have a particular interest in children managing a co – parenting situation, children who have been adopted and young people with behavioural and emotional needs.
